23 Pre-Lenten Carnival Celebrations
February 23rd to 27th.

Carnaval is an official Mexican holiday that marks the beginning of a five-day celebration. Catholics must give up "carnal" pleasures, such as red meat, for 40 days during Lent. Carnaval is a festival that celebrates Mexicans?last indulgence in these "carnal" pleasures. In cities such as Mazatlan, which attracts up to 300,000 people, Cozumel and Veracruz the Carnaval is almost like a Mardi Gras. This day is celebrated with floats, music, parades and dances.
