Fiestas in Mexico

Semana Santa
Palm Sunday until Easter Day

Nationwide.  Date and month varies.

This important religious holiday lasts for two weeks.  This fiesta celebrates the last days of Christ¬ís life.  Passionate plays, featuring elaborate costumes, are performed.  The person chosen to play the role of Jesus Christ may practice for a year.  Sometimes a real crucifixion or flagellation may take place.  On the dawn of Semana Santa, a four-mile hike is begun with men bearing El Senor de la Columna, a life-size bleeding statue of Christ.  For the full two weeks this statue is carried from church to church amid prayers, fireworks, processions and much celebration.
