Fiestas in Mexico

5 Cinco de Mayo
May 5th.

After Mexico had gained independence from Spain in 1810, a series of wars over the following years left Mexico financially insecure and in debt to a number of nations, including France and Spain.  In 1862, After Mexico had stopped making financial payments to France, the French decided to send Napoleon¬ís relative, the Archduke Maximillian to gain leadership and rule Mexico.  As the invading French army was advancing on Puebla a small army of 4,500 soldiers were able to defeat the French army of more than 6,500.  This victory is the cause for this celebration, which is becoming increasingly popular in the United States.  This fiesta is a celebration of Mexican culture: their food, drink, customs, and music.
